Pride versus Humility
Humility is the mother of all good just as pride is the mother of all evil.
Rasulullaah (Pbuh) said: "Evil indeed is that servant who displays might and arrogance forgetting that the Almighty is Allaah."
Rasulullaah (Pbuh) said: "He will not enter Paradise, who has an iota of pride in his heart."
Pride according to Rasulullaah (Pbuh) is to consider others inferior and to deny the truth.
Umar (RA) said: "What I fear most for you is when you move around having an opinion (of piety) about yourself."
Pride creeps in as a result of knowledge, wealth, piety, beauty (especially in women), strength.
If a man cannot humble himself when he's tested with knowledge, wealth, piety, beauty and strength then suffice to say that he/she is proud.
To tame pride you need to constantly remind yourself of your sins.
To tame pride always remind yourself that you don't deserve the blessings conferred on you by Allaah.
To tame pride always remember the fact that the most beloved of Allaah is Rasulullaah (Pbuh) yet he was the most humble.
To tame pride we need to neutralize the fact that our parents are so-and-so or we are from so-and-so race or tribe.
Iman and humility elevated the Ethiopian Bilal to the pedestal of a Jannati while kufr and pride debased the honorable Abu Jahl to the depth of Jahannam.
He who will be humble will be elevated by Allaah and he who will be proud will be debased by Allaah.
May Allaah save us from pride and arrogance and equip us with Iman and humility.
Ameen
