A Synopsis Of My Pre-Khutbah Lecture On Ramadan

In the Name of Allaah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Sawm....the English equivalent of fasting which from the perspective of the Islamic Shareeah is the conscious abstinence from the cravings of the carnal self from dawn till sunset with the aim of attaining spiritual discipline and self control.
Putting the spotlight on the statement of Allaah (SWT) in the authentic hadith on the strength of Abu Hurayrah (RA) recorded by both Imam Bukhari (1761) and Muslim (1946) where the Prophet (Pbuh) said:
"Allaah said: "Every act of the son of Adam is for him except fasting, it is for Me and I shall reward for it...."
Subhanallah! Allaah has given fasting a special quality that is not found in anything else. He attaches close proximity between Himself and fasting.
Scholars said there is every likelihood of Riya (showing off) to contaminate seemingly pious deeds but as for fasting only Allaah knows the reality of the fasting person. A view shared by Imam Qurtubi.
This also is a generous indication that only Allaah knows how much reward He has kept for the one that perfects his fasting seeking for the pleasure of Allaah Alone.
Fasting has deep inner aspects to such an extent that even the smell of a fasting person is beloved to Allaah.
Abstaining from what is naturally allowed (eating, drinking, sexual intercourse) because of fasting demonstrates the sincerity of a believer's devotion to Allaah.
Strive as much as you can to perfect your spiritual plans during this Ramadan for a day has passed out of the month and many more will follow suit.
Don't say it is too early to evaluate your closeness to Allaah from yesterday...now is the time to see how far you have gone so far.
"Fasting is for Me, and I shall reward it."
It is upon this emotion that the Muslims are encouraged to observe fasting by being mindful of their duties to Allaah.
May Allaah give us the strength and the ability to perfect our sawm thereby attracting His Mercy and pleasure.
