You drive around big cities and often see poor innocent men sleeping beneath the bridge having a wonderful rest against all the traffic buzz and the city noise and on the other hand is a 'wealthy man' who has a mansion with sound proof doors, water-bed (they say) and security cameras yet he can't sleep until he takes a pill. What then is a good life?
In the Glorious Qur'an Allaah has promised a narrowed life for those who disobey Him. If that wealth is ill-gotten, you will never be contented and more so you will always be depressed and be tested with constant fear of loosing the wealth. It was thus captured as: "But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'an nor acts on its teachings), verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection." Qur'an 20 Surah Ta-Ha verse 124.
On the other hand, Allaah promises a good life when Eeman& 'amalis Salihaat (good, righteous deeds) are a common characteristic in the life of a person.
Happiness and Joy cannot be purchased, they can only be inspired by Allaah. And this is not kept exclusively in wealth and health but in Allaah's obedience and keeping a clean heart free of shirk, malice, envy, pride, jealousy and animosity.
Scholars of Qur'anic exegesis said one of the major characteristics of a good life is that Allaah will bless the person with contentment of the heart.
The Arab poet said: The king sitting on his throne is a slave as long as he has greed and the slave is a king as long as he is content.
You will see people owning empires, kingdoms, wealth, everything and anything but the constant fear will be that of it being snatched away. This is a narrowed life.
He's so much into wealth acquisition and he's got no time for Allaah and in that process also he's got no time for his family. What a looser!.
The Haves and the Have-nots aren't the wealthy and the poor but the contented and the depressed.
Scholars said a good life is also characterized by the ability of a person facing difficulties to constantly focus on the reward Allaah promised those in trials and tribulations.
May Allaah grant us a good life.
